When Should I Study Arabic Grammar?
If you are considering learning Arabic, you may be wondering about the answer to the question, “When should I study Arabic grammar?” This is a very important question, especially for students who are new to the language. The answer may surprise you.
When to Study Arabic Grammar for Beginners
At Nassra Arabic Method, we recommend that our beginner students do not study grammar right away. Instead, we have them focus on developing their verbal Arabic skills by learning how to have simple conversations first.
During the early stages of learning a new language, memorising grammar rules should not be the main priority for a student. For one thing, it takes away a person’s enthusiasm for learning if they spend too much time on grammar. We use a different approach to language learning instead.
The 80/20 Rule for Learning to Speak Arabic
A language student wants to hear Arabic being spoken in everyday situations so that they can learn how to hold conversations. In spoken language outside of a classroom, even if someone says something that isn’t quite grammatically correct or doesn’t use quite the right word, no one stops to correct them. The language flows along anyway; it’s much more forgiving than in written form.
Once our students have had some time to learn some Arabic language and start to feel comfortable with it, we introduce the 80/20 Rule. This means 80 percent of instruction time is devoted to:
- Introducing and developing new vocabulary
- Teaching basic Arabic phrases
- Helping our students learn simple and easy sentences
The other 20 percent of instruction time is spent focused on grammar. The grammar we teach our students at Nassra Arabic Method is directly related to spoken Arabic. We focus on teaching our students how to conjugate verbs and how to replace nouns and adjectives.
Percentage of Grammar Instruction Changes Over Time
As our students progress through their Arabic language learning and become more confident in their abilities, we slowly increase the amount of grammar instruction they receive. Our goal is to allow them to continue to develop their spoken Arabic language skills while introducing more grammar to them over time.
Exception to Grammar Learning Rule
The only exception to our rule for learning grammar is in a situation where we have a student or a group of students who are preparing to write an exam. Focusing on learning grammar rules will not necessarily make you a confident Arabic speaker
