Learn Arabic Grammar Effortlessly with these 3 Powerful Techniques
If you want to speak and write any foreign language, you will need to be able to master its grammar rules. Focusing your studies exclusively on this aspect of a language is a sure way of becoming bored and losing interest very quickly, though. Fortunately for language students, we have developed 3 powerful techniques to help you learn Arabic grammar effortlessly: Context, Imitation and Repetition.
Two Biggest Mistakes Students Make When Learning Grammar
When students are enrolled in a language course and are trying to learn grammar, they tend to make two big mistakes repeatedly.
1. They try to study grammar on its own.
Grammar classes which don’t include any other instruction are dry and can be quite boring. The student ends up becoming frustrated and loses interest in learning the language.
2. They focus on the learning names in grammar instruction.
Instruction that focuses on the different parts of speech or verb tenses and how to recognize them in a sentence is not the best choice if the goal is to become proficient in grammar. A much better approach to learning is to focus on practical applications, and let the grammar learning flow naturally.
Techniques to Help you Learn Arabic Grammar Effortlessly
Learning Arabic grammar doesn’t have to be difficult. You learned to speak your native language without specific grammar lessons. Similar principles can be used to help you learn to speak Arabic correctly.
1. Context
Context means that you picked up the language or languages you were exposed to in childhood because you heard people around you speaking them. You can use the same idea to help you learn a second (or subsequent) language by creating a context.
An excellent way to do this is through the use of stories (both verbal and written):
- Try telling it in different grammatical points of view (past, present and future tenses) and note how the grammar changes with each one.
- Listen to the story as it is being told from the first, second and third person pronouns. Notice how verbs change to conform with different pronouns.
- Look for patterns in the language and how they can be put to practical use. For example, if adjectives are always placed after nouns, use the same technique when you are writing a story.
2. Imitation
Imitation is modeling the sound, rhythm and the way words are being used in a sentence aloud. This is the same technique children use when they are learning their native language. They listen to a word, phrase or a sentence and then repeat it back in the same way they have heard it. Over time, their speech becomes clearer and easier for others to understand. The same technique can be used to learn a foreign language.
Listen to the way people speak in conversation or watch television programs. Imitate the way they say certain words or sentences. Focus on the rhythm and the sound. Practicing in this manner will help you to improve your grammar, as well as your accent.
3. Repetition
This strategy is the key to learning any new language. Use it to learn grammar and improve your spoken language skills.
To start, create some examples for certain phrases you would like to learn. If you are interested in learning a particular phrase, such as “I was…,” create examples of it using the same verb tense. When you are finished with it, you will have phrases such as “I was eating,” “I was going,” “I was playing” or “I was walking.” Repeat them until they feel automatic.
